UConn’s Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Advising Office provides resources and advising to UConn students and alumni interested in pursuing careers in the health professions. Our office specializes in working with our pre-medical and pre-dental populations, but we encourage all students to explore their career options in health fields.

UConn is committed to helping students and alumni prepare for law school and legal careers. At the Pre-Law Advising Office, we offer events and workshops to help students get a sense of what it means to be a lawyer. We also help students with the law school application process by reviewing personal statements and resumes, providing information about various schools and programs, and assessing competing offers of admissions.

Available to students from all of the University’s schools and colleges, the University Scholar Program allows students to design and pursue an in-depth research or creative project and to craft an individualized plan of study that supports their intellectual interests during their final three semesters. Graduation as a University Scholar recognizes a student’s extraordinary engagement with self-reflective learning and research or creative endeavors.

The Individualized and Interdisciplinary Studies Program (IISP) works with undergraduates who wish to design their own majors or pursue select interdisciplinary minors (including Global Studies, European Studies, and Crime and Justice). Individualized majors are based in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or College of Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources, and may draw on courses in other schools and colleges.

Our Waterfront Program is designed to provide recreational, instructional, academic, and competitive on-the-water programming that complements the marine and maritime focus of our coastal campus. Our programs are launched from our beachside facility at the north end of the UConn Avery Point campus with access to the Thames River and Fishers Island Sound. Enjoy opportunities for sailing, kayaking, and/or paddleboarding.

How to Participate:

The Water Rec schedule varies seasonally. Details are shared through our Instagram and Facebook accounts, UConn Student Activities weekly “Things to Do” (T2D) emails, text and email groups, and campus posters and monitors.

UConn Avery Point is known for its robust athletic department that helps student-athletes reach their full potential and produces outstanding ambassadors for our campus. We are the only UConn campus other than Storrs to provide students with the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate sports, competing in the NJCAA Region 21.

The Avery Point Campus Athletic Center features a six-lane, 25-yard swimming pool, gymnasium, and fitness center. The multi-purpose gymnasium features a full collegiate basketball court, which can be configured for volleyball (two courts), indoor soccer, or indoor floor hockey. The fitness center features treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bicycles.

The Center for International Students and Scholars (CISS) opened in July 2022 to create a welcoming space for international students and visiting scholars and bring together services for international students and visiting scholars at the Storrs campus.

Students and exchange visitors at UConn Avery Point can meet with an ISSS advisor when they visit campus, which is usually one time per semester. Students and exchange visitors at UConn Avery Point should contact Neena Kapoor, neena.kapoor@uconn.edu, with any immigration or international advising questions, or to arrange for travel signatures.

First generation students come from families where neither a parent nor guardian has a four-year degree or higher from a college or university. Many students whose parents have degrees outside of the United States also identify as First Gen.

• Avery Point Campus Nurse Navigators: A nurse navigator is a nurse that can guide students, offer support, education, advocate, and assist with coordination of care for acute or chronic healthcare needs including referrals to medical services in the community. • Clinical Case Manager for Mental Health Services: Our mental health professionals can provide short-term counseling. For students seeking more intensive treatment, our mental health case managers can connect students to appropriate local providers with experience working with college students.
